ICE hold placed on Texarkana mom accused of leaving kids home alone

TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) - The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office confirms ICE has placed a hold on a Texarkana mom who was arrested for allegedly leaving her two children at home alone when the house caught fire.

A hold means once charges are resolved with the arresting agency, the agency that has placed the hold will be notified and takes over the case.

The Texarkana mother is accused of endangering her children’s lives after her kids were left home alone, police say.

The Texarkana Texas Police Department says Hilda Xona Cojoc, 29, was arrested Sunday, June 29 after leaving her two young boys home alone... then the house caught fire.

Just before 1 p.m. that afternoon, first responders were called out to a fire at a home in the 1900 block of Walnut Street. Officials say flames were shooting from the roof when firefighters got there. Police say a neighbor had helped the two boys, ages 7 and 10, get to safety across the street.

 

Police say they talked to the boys and learned their mom had left them home alone around 8 that morning to go to work. Police say the boys had been home alone for around five hours when the fire started.

Officials were able to get in touch with Cojoc, who came straight home and was arrested. She was booked into the Bi-State Jail for abandoning/endangering a child. Her

protective services, officials say.

“We’re just incredibly grateful this didn’t turn into something even worse. This could have ended in absolute tragedy,” the police department said.

There has been a major response to Cojoc’s arrest from the community.
