General Motors (GM) has announced plans to move $4 billion worth of vehicle production from Mexico back to the United States — a major shift in the company’s manufacturing strategy.
According to the announcement, GM will relocate production of the Chevrolet Blazer from Mexico to its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, and the Equinox to its Kansas City, Kansas facility by 2027. Additionally, the Orion Township plant in Michigan — originally planned for electric vehicle (EV) production — will now be retooled for gasoline-powered SUVs and pickup trucks.
This move comes as EV demand slows and trade tensions with Mexico increase. GM says reshoring production will help protect profits and create thousands of new jobs across more than 50 sites in 19 U.S. states.
“Our commitment to American manufacturing and American workers is stronger than ever,” said CEO Mary Barra.
The news caused GM shares to edge slightly higher and has been praised as a strategic response to global market changes.
