Erin Hester was sitting at a red light when she noticed a soldier step out of his vehicle and stand at attention beside the road. A funeral procession was passing by. He wasn’t part of the ceremony. He didn’t know the deceased. But in the middle of a downpour, he stood still and solemn, offering a gesture of deep respect to a grieving family he had never met.
“This gentleman went above and beyond,” Hester wrote on social media, sharing a photo she took of the moment. “This made my heart happy to see the amount of respect he showed to a family that he doesn’t even know.”
The image quickly went viral, striking a chord with thousands. Soon after, the soldier was identified as Colonel Jack L. Usrey of the Tennessee Army National Guard.
