Shocking footage shows moment 'disrespectful' tourist breaks 'Van Gogh' chair covered in crystals after sitting on it

A viral video has ignited outrage online after capturing the moment a tourist broke a crystal-covered art installation known as the “Van Gogh Chair.” The incident occurred at a museum exhibition dedicated to reimagining the works of Vincent van Gogh, where the ornate chair was displayed as a symbolic centerpiece.

The footage shows the tourist, reportedly ignoring signs not to touch the exhibit, casually sitting on the sparkling chair in an attempt to pose for a photo. Moments later, the fragile structure collapses beneath them, shattering a portion of the crystal embellishments and damaging the carefully constructed frame.

Museum staff quickly intervened and escorted the individual out of the exhibit. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the damage to the artwork is significant. The chair, said to be inspired by Van Gogh’s famous 1888 painting “Van Gogh’s Chair,” was handcrafted by a contemporary artist and encrusted with hundreds of Swarovski crystals.

Social media users slammed the tourist’s actions, labeling them “disrespectful,” “entitled,” and a sign of growing disregard for cultural spaces. The museum has since announced that repairs are underway but emphasized the importance of respecting art and following posted guidelines.

“This was more than just a chair—it was a tribute to creativity and vision,” one curator said. “It’s heartbreaking to see it treated this way.”
